The Eli Lilly AWARD-PEDS PLUS Type 2 Diabetes Research Study for Children & Teens is Enrolling
Now, however, researchers want to see if (when given at higher investigational doses) it can help to better control the condition in children/teens whose blood sugar (HbA1c) remains high despite treatment.
*Though dulaglutide (Trulicity®) is an approved T2D medication, it is considered “investigational” in this study because researchers are assessing it at higher doses than those previously approved for use in this age group.

With type 2 diabetes, the body EITHER doesn’t make enough insulin OR can’t use insulin properly OR both. This results in a build-up of sugar/glucose in the blood (referred to as HbA1c or A1c on lab tests). Over time, high blood sugar can cause serious health problems and do damage to organs including the heart, eyes and kidneys.
Though more common in adults, the diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes in U.S. children has been on the rise — which means it has even more time to affect the body.
Yet children and teens with T2D have fewer approved glucose-lowering treatment options compared to adults — and it progresses faster, which can result in more health issues at a younger age.
Thus, there is an important unmet need for more options to treat children and adolescents with T2D, especially in those with high glucose despite treatment.
If your child has T2D that is not well-controlled, consider enrolling them in this study. The first step is to see if they may qualify. Know that even if your child does qualify and is enrolled, you can still withdraw them from the study at any time, for any reason.
